Bakersfield’s stagnant pools boost West Nile

One of the United States’ worst-hit cities for foreclosures in 2007 - Bakersfield - became an epicenter of West Nile virus that year largely due to mosquitoes breeding in abandoned swimming pools, UC Davis and Kern County scientists have reported.

The Central Valley city had 140 diagnosed cases, up from 51 in 2006, or a 275 percent increase. Over the same period, mortgage delinquency notices went up by 300 percent. (more…)

Study: Folic acid, B vitamins offer no cancer protection

Researchers have more disappointing news for people who hope to protect their health with vitamins.
In the longest-running trial of its kind, doctors found that folic acid and other B vitamins didn’t prevent breast cancer or cancer in general, according to a seven-year study of 5,442 women in today’s Journal of the American Medical Association. (more…)
